12:02:53 <slacktopus> <darkk> Hello everyone! That's Leonid form OONI. And we're starting monthly OONI community meeting in the channel.
12:03:45 <slacktopus> <darkk> If someone has topics to discuss today, please, add them to https://pad.riseup.net/p/ooni-community-meeting
12:04:59 <slacktopus> <darkk> Meanwhile, I'll do a quick update of OONIverse news that happened since the last one :slightly_smiling_face:
12:07:27 <slacktopus> <darkk> - OONI Team participated in Tor meetup in Mexico where we have brainstormed the roadmap for upcomming half a year - we've updated our report on Venezuela highlighting Tor network being unblocked there at least in one of ISPs - Beta versions of new _desktop_ OONI Probe (and command-line versions as well) were released for MacOS, Windows and Linux - we're preparing a report on Uganda that will be published in a week or so
12:09:02 <slacktopus> <lupa> Hello ! Here Lupa from Tedic, Paraguay
12:09:16 <slacktopus> <darkk> - we're also brainstormed possible improvements for web_connectivity net tests that will help to gather evidence of network interference in encrypted HTTPS era as it's impossible to serve a blockpage over HTTPS, so another instruments for transparency are needed
12:11:58 <slacktopus> <darkk> Also, if anyone is in London, @elioqoshi is going to present OONI at Mozilla festival in upcoming days.
12:14:09 <slacktopus> <darkk> I think, that's most of highlights of the events that happened during last month in the OONIverse.
12:15:04 <slacktopus> <lupa> Where can I find new version for Linux?
12:15:31 <slacktopus> <arsalan> Darkk I would love to know more about OONIverse!
12:16:02 <slacktopus> <darkk> @lupa glad to see you on the board! Thanks for joining us! :slightly_smiling_face: (just for the purpose of recording OONI has established partnership with Tedic -- https://twitter.com/OpenObservatory/status/1042760192197373952)
12:17:38 <slacktopus> <darkk> @lupa https://github.com/ooni/probe-cli/releases/tag/v3.0.0-beta.1> following releases will be <https://github.com/ooni/probe-cli/releases That's beta and things may be broken. Also, it's command-line. @sarath_ms did some awesome fixes for Linux port of OONI Desktop, but I'm not 100% what's the state of that branch.
12:18:21 <slacktopus> <lupa> I can help debugging :) (sorry if offtopic)
12:18:51 <slacktopus> <darkk> Seems, Linux beta of desktop application is not ready yet https://github.com/ooni/probe-desktop/pull/23 :slightly_smiling_face:
12:20:53 <slacktopus> <darkk> @arsalan do you have any specific questions? :slightly_smiling_face: OONIverse term was coined long time ago together with "OONItarians" (people who help OONI to happen, inhabitant of the OONIverse)
12:21:36 <slacktopus> <arsalan> Okay I think I missed out on that :slightly_smiling_face: Well
12:24:37 <slacktopus> <sarath_ms> About Linux support, there is some work to be done on the new ooniprobe command line tool which the desktop app depends on.
12:26:13 <slacktopus> <darkk> @lupa by the way, what flavor of Linux do you use? Should we ping you when the beta will be ready?
12:30:14 <slacktopus> <lupa> Our team is usgin Mint (Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04). Also we have some raspberrys (but I heared RPI is not supported anymore)
12:33:19 <slacktopus> <darkk> RPi is not supported as a separate distribution (named lepidopter), indeed. We'll probably ship a "last upgrade" when OONI Probe CLI 3.0 will be out, but that's unclear. But Raspberrys are still extremely useful while doing non-trivial network measurements and doing R&D to understand net tests improvements, so don't hurry to throw them out :slightly_smiling_face:
12:36:07 <slacktopus> <sarath_ms> @lupa it would be awesome to get feedback from different Linux distros. I use debian. If you are really interested, I can help you (later) setup the current WIP version to play around with. Needs some undocumented workarounds.
12:37:21 <slacktopus> <darkk> One of the issues that blocked us from supporting Raspberries is that we had very conflicting goals: - we did not want to have a shell access for OONI team by default - we wanted to have auto-upgrade feature by default And lepidopter was designed to support that. But it also means that _if_ something goes wrong (and everything always go wrong in _IT_ world), then we have no good way to recover it. And asking even some part of partners to re-write
12:37:21 <slacktopus> every update is not super practical, but it was the only fix we could suggest in "no shell" mode.
12:40:09 <slacktopus> <darkk> So one of the possible future directions in that are is: - have some canonical configuration with Raspberries for people who ultimately trust OONI team and want to have a R&D box in their network that OONI team has root access to - have some simplified non-interactive android application that can act as headless version of OONI Probe on a cheap always-on android phone that serve the purpose of "batch" measurements and that does not have to worry
12:40:09 <slacktopus> bandwidth and battery constraints
12:43:11 <slacktopus> <darkk> Given the fact that market price of Raspberry Pi is not 35$ but actually closer to 70$ (+SD card, +case, +good power supply unit) it seems that low-end android phone is a reasonable replacement for that goal. And, what's very important, it's a bit easier to fix if something goes wrong.
12:45:32 <slacktopus> <darkk> So far that's almost full story of current (OONI + Raspberry) relationships and it's future :slightly_smiling_face:
12:46:32 <slacktopus> <darkk> Another highlight: if anyone is going to OTF Summit in Taiwan next week -- you'll be able to meet Arturo and Maria from OONI there.
12:57:05 <slacktopus> <darkk> Seems, we're out of topics to discuss today.
12:57:16 <slacktopus> <darkk> @arsalan @lupa @sarath_ms @faithafia thanks for joining this meeting! Also, (just a disambiguation), if you have a question or any other words for OONI -- you can always reach out OONI Team at this channel (or via other means of communication like IRC, E-Mail: https://ooni.torproject.org/about/#contact).
12:58:27 <slacktopus> <lupa> Perfect ! @sarath_ms when you available, I'm here to test linux support.
13:00:51 <slacktopus> <arsalan> Thanks for the updates.
13:01:38 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Hi everyone, I'm so sorry for being late, something very urgent/important came up.
13:01:56 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Thanks @lupa and @arsalan for joining :slightly_smiling_face:
13:03:06 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Hi everyone, I'm here late too. My apologies but I've scanned through the discussions for today
13:04:41 <slacktopus> <lupa> please send me next meeting call invitation to lupa at tedic d0t org
13:05:38 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @lupa we generally share information for the community meetings on the partners mailing list, keepiton mailing list, and on the ooni-talk mailing list: https://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/ooni-talk
13:06:22 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> This meeting was scheduled based on doodle, but we have previously hosted community meetings every last Tuesday of the month.
13:06:49 <slacktopus> <lupa> ok, I will join there
13:06:53 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Would you all prefer that I share a doodle for scheduling next month's meeting, or should we just have it on the last Tuesday of the month (at 14:00 UTC)?
13:08:07 <slacktopus> <faithafia> Thkx
13:10:30 <slacktopus> <lupa> last Tuesday is ok for me
13:13:02 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Does the last Tuesday of the month at 14:00 UTC for the next community meeting work also for everyone else? Or is there a strong preference for doodle?
13:14:32 <slacktopus> <tunde77> I suggested the Doodle Poll, but I'm also open to last Tuesday, which is November 27
13:16:47 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Alright. Then we can assume that the next meeting will be on Tuesday, 27th November on this channel at 14:00 UTC. I'll share an email on the aforementioned lists to confirm date and time (1 week in advance).
13:17:36 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Is there anything else someone would like to raise or ask before we end the meeting?
13:22:43 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Thanks everyone for joining us! Hope you have a great day :slightly_smiling_face: And you can always reach us here in general
